Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are red, blue, or purple threadlike veins that appear on the surface of the skin. Spider veins most often appear on the face and legs, although they can appear on other areas of the body too. Some patients choose to treat their spider veins purely for cosmetic reasons, but others treat them because they suffer from symptoms of throbbing, aching, and itchy legs.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are blue or dark purple bulging veins that protrude from the surface of the skin. The most commonly affected area is the legs, and they often cause a number of uncomfortable or painful symptoms such as:

  • Burning, throbbing and itching
  • Leg fatigue
  • Heaviness
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration

What Is The Treatment For Spider And Varicose Veins?

The treatment for spider veins includes sclerotherapy and Varithena, both minimally-invasive procedures that are proven to be highly effective. During sclerotherapy, a medicated solution is injected into the blood vessels and causes them to shrink. Similarly, Varithena involves the injection of a medicated foam to treat both the symptoms and underlying causes of spider veins.

To treat varicose veins, a varicose veins specialist may elect to use any one of the following cutting-edge procedures: endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), sclerotherapy or Varithena. EVLA treatment uses a laser light to heat the vein until it closes, and RFA uses radio waves to close unhealthy veins.

Can Spider Veins and Varicose Veins Come Back After Treatment?

Patients who undergo our treatments for spider veins and varicose veins have very high success rates, especially when compared with traditional surgery. It is possible to develop abnormal veins after treatment if you have weak vein valves, however, intravascular ultrasound can be used to monitor this issue. Multiple treatments may be necessary to adequately correct spider and varicose veins.
