Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Venous Disease?

Venous (or vascular) disease refers to any number of conditions that affect the vascular system.  They include:

  • Aneurysms
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Blood clots
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Raynaud's disease
  • Stroke
  • Varicose veins
  • Vasculitis

What Causes Venous Diseases?

The cause of venous disease depends on the specific disease itself. However, causes generally include:

  • Genetics
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure/high cholesterol
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • Certain medications/hormones

What Is The Treatment For Venous Disease?

Treatment will depend on the type and severity of the venous disease you are diagnosed with. Types of treatments for vascular diseases can include:

  • Lifestyle modifications (e.g. heart-healthy foods, regular exercise)
  • Medicines for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood thinners, and clot-dissolving drugs
  • Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA)
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Varithena

Is Vein Treatment Painful?

EVLA and RFA are both minimally-invasive procedures that are performed under local anesthesia, so patients do not feel discomfort during treatment.

During sclerotherapy, some patients may experience minor discomfort akin to a burning sensation, but post-treatment recovery time is very quick. During a Varithena treatment, the doctor will inject a numbing solution so as to minimize discomfort, and patients can resume normal activity within one day after the procedure.
